Environmental activist group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan PNE) appeals to the Regional Trial Court of Nueva Vizcaya to junk Oceanagold’s application for a writ of preliminary injunction after the mining company’s illegal operations were hindered by indigenous people of Nueva Vizcaya after the provincial government ordered the company to stop.

“Oceanagold is desperate, is using the Court as an attempt to seek a legal premise for their illegal mine operations. The court should not give in to the duplicity of Oceanagold. It has no standing mining agreement with the government, the local governments of Nueva Vizcaya have passed resolutions against the renewal of their mining permit in the province, and the people of Nueva Vizcaya want them out of Didipio, ”said Leon Dulce, National Coordinator of Kalikasan PNE.

The Australian-Canadian transnational corporation Oceanagold continued their operations despite the expiration of their FTAA last June 20, 2019, citing go signals from the Mines and Sciences Bureau (MGB) that they may continue their operations since they have submitted their renewal applications and this was recommended by the agency to the Office of the President who will decide on the application. Though Malacanang reported to have returned the application to MGB  founding that the application was incomplete.

“Oceanagold cannot operate in Nueva Vizcaya. There is no social acceptability. Oceanagold has loss support at every level of local government in Nueva Vizcaya. Barangay officials of Didipio have continuously filed complaints against Oceanagold’s humanitarian and environmental crimes, municipal and provincial level have filed a cease and desist order against Oceanagold.”

Protests have also been staged from the grassroots level reaching to the international level. Since July 1, community barricade were staged by the residents of Didipio and adjacent barangay. International groups from Melbourne, Australia have also bombarded Oceanagold’s Australian headquarters as a solidarity to the people of Nueva Vizcaya last July 9.

“We urge the regional court not to succumb for Oceanagold’s tactics of safeguarding their continuous acquisition of copper and gold from our lands. The court must heed the growing clamor of the Nuevo Vizcayanos for justice against the environmental crimes of Oceanagold” ended Dulce.###
