As the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines declare a unilateral and reciprocal ceasefire during the holidays, Karapatan enjoins the public to remain vigilant amid sinister efforts of militarists in government to pursue fascist attacks against the people.
While we remain steadfast in calling for the resumption of the peace negotiations between the two parties, we remain as persistent in pushing for a halt to extrajudicial killings conducted by State forces through the sham drug war and counterinsurgency program and for the reaffirmation of previously signed agreements such as the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) and the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees (JASIG).
We call on the GRP to release all 629 political prisoners, 382 of them were arrested during the Duterte administration, on just and humanitarian grounds. Instead of inflicting additional cruel treatment on the political prisoners through attempts to separate them and denial of visitation rights to their families, they should be released from prison considering the charges against them stem from the fake news and evidence concocted by the military and police.
Furthermore, the rescinding of all executive issuances including Executive Order No. 70 and Memorandum Order No. 32 should be conducted, as these have resulted in grave human rights violations.
