ACT Teachers Representatives Antonio Tinio and France Castro vehemently condemned the brutal dispersal of the striking workers of PEPMACO earlier today.
Last June 24, the Pepmaco Workers’ Union – Naflu – KMU launched its workers’ strike because of the widespread practice of contractualization, inhumane and unjust working conditions, maltreatment of their workers, union busting and many other violations. The Pepmaco Workers’ Union reported earlier today that while the strikers were resting, a dispersal team attacked their picket line, injuring many of the workers.
“We strongly condemn this brutal and violent dispersal of the Pepmaco workers’ strike,” Tinio said. “They are on strike because of the continuing contractualization, unjust and inhumane treatment of the management, union busting, and many other violations. Their demands are legitimate and just. The violent attempt to disperse their picket line is another violation by the Pepmaco Manufacturing Corporation”
“Hindi na nga makatao ang pagtrato ng Pepmaco sa kaniyang mga manggagawa, marahas pa nilang inatake ang kanilang picket line habang sila ay nagpapahinga nang madaling araw,” Castro said. “They are cowards and heartless monsters for continuing to oppress the workers demanding for regular jobs, occupational safety and decent salaries.”
“President Duterte promised in his campaign last 2016 that he will prioritize ending contractualization. One of his many promises that remained as promises,” Tinio added. “The struggle of the Pepmaco workers are not isolated and are endured by many filipino workers in the country. It is high time that the government listen to the demands of the Filipino people instead of the dictate of the oligarchs.”
“Workers from different companies have launched strikes demanding for regularization, occupational safety at decent wages. Workers from NutriAsia, Coca-cola and now Pepmaco have been demanding for Duterte’s campaign promise, yet they continue to endure the struggles of having deplorable working conditions,”
“We join the Pepmaco worker’s union in their struggle for regular jobs, decent salaries and wages, just benefits, safe working conditions and their right to unionize. We condemn the brutal and violent dispersal of the Pepmaco security and hired goons,” Castro ended.
