National labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno welcomes the initiatives of pro-worker representatives to hold Peerless Manufacturing Inc. (Pepmaco) accountable for gross labor laws violations and the violent dispersal of workers’ strike in the wee hours of 28 June at the gates of the Pepmaco Canlubang plant.
KMU commends the representatives from the Makabayan Bloc for filing House Resolution Nos. 27, 28 and 29 as the 18th Congress opened.
The resolutions filed call for a House inquiry on the labor-only contracting scheme of Pepmaco, which covers more than 500 workers, and the alleged violations of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Law as contractual workers complain that they were subjected to unsafe working conditions, which often resulted to work-related injuries.
As principal authors of the OSH Law who worked for the passage of the law in 2018, the Makabayan Bloc representatives push to use the complaints of contractual workers against Pepmaco as test case for the enforcement of the OSH Law.
“The resolutions send a strong statement of support for workers,” said Adonis. ###
